Urban Planning and Design Studio

Online

Receive hands-on practice in professional urban planning and design skills in a studio/lecture format. Immerse yourself in planning and design principles, examples and case studies for today's communities. Critique land use plans and site designs, create and prepare site plans, and analyze and develop planning staff reports. Emphasis is placed on urban infill and sustainable community design, and the challenges and complexities of planning and urban design in growing communities. In-class studio work and critique, as well as guest lectures, a hands-on downtown design modeling charrette and field visits are also included. There will be a minimum of 24 hours of planning and design work conducted outside of class.

Section Notes

This is an online, remote learning course, which consists of 30 hours of content and curriculum that is taught with pre-recorded lectures as well all mandatory live Zoom session with the instructor(s). Pre-recorded lectures and live sessions are accessed via our Canvas learning system and Zoom. This course is the same length as a standard 5 day, in-person course, please be sure to plan your schedule accordingly.

This course is open March 31 – May 16, 2025, with live sessions on Thursdays, 2:00-4:00 PM PST: April 3, April 10, April 17, April 24, May 1, and May 8.

Attendance of the live sessions are mandatory to receive credit for this course.

We allow registration through the 12:00 PM PST (noon) on the first day of the course. We cannot extend course access beyond 11:59 PM on last day of class, so students pursuing a late enrollment acknowledge that they will have less time to complete the materials. Please contact the course representative with any questions.

Jeff Loux

Jeff Loux, Ph.D.,

most recently served as the Town Manager for the Town of Truckee, where he was responsible for all Town policies, activities and operations. Prior to that Dr. Loux served as an Associate Dean for UC Davis’ School of Continuing and Professional Education and an Associate Professor in UC Davis’ Environmental Design Department. He has also served as Community Development Director for sever local jurisdictions (Truckee, Davis, Santa Cruz County), and as a Planning and Water Policy consultant for nearly ten years in the Bay Area and Davis.

Dr. Loux's water resources experience includes ten years of negotiating water resources agreements on the American River, New River, Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and various ground water basins in California. As a consultant, he has worked on integrated water management plans, ground water plans, river revitalization plans and urban water management efforts. His book, Water and Land Use, first published in 2004, pioneered the notion of an integrated and sustainable approach to urban planning based on water resource understanding.
