Small Vineyard Management I - Introduction to Vineyard Practices

Welcome to the Small Vineyard Management course series organized and operated by University of California Davis in conjunction with UC Cooperative Extension. This is the first course in a series of classes designed to help attendees understand the core fundamentals of vineyard design, establishment, and management. Small Vineyard Management I, taking place at the Harry E. Jacob Research Vineyard & Facility in Oakville, California, is an introduction to the essential knowledge needed to begin farming your own grapevines. Gain valuable information about topics such as vineyard site selection, vine establishment, selecting grape cultivars, and trellis design; all delivered by our expert UC Cooperative Extension Advisors from across California.  

This course has no prerequisites for attendees but is designed to provide practical knowledge for all levels of vineyard professional. Our instructors will cover each topic from the basics to more advanced, teaching the tested principles that are essential to successful vineyard management. Small Vineyard Management I is a two-day intensive in-person course that is divided into a day of in-class discussion and a day of field practicum. Our first day will focus on the theory and practices utilized in all grape vineyards in California. This day will cover vine management, site management, and pest and disease control methods. The field practicum for day 2 will focus on the in-field application of the information covered during the in-class portion of the course.

Section Notes

Students will be at the UCD Oakville Field Station in the Napa Valley. This is part of the UCD campus. Students will be in the classroom the first day. There will be field demonstrations the second day, regardless of weather conditions. Students should dress in weather appropriate clothing. Field work appropriate footwear is encouraged. Out of consideration to other students observing the demonstrations, umbrellas are discouraged. We would also suggest that students wear a hat and sunscreen. Please be advised, there will be a considerable amount of standing for long periods while students are in the field.

There will be no morning refreshments or lunch provided. Please plan to bring a brown bag lunch each day. You will have 1 hour for lunch.

The Oakville Field Station is considered part of the UCD Campus. You will be sent periodic emails on current protocols closer to the class start date. Or, you may check the campus website for visitors.
