Introduction to Nurse Anesthesia: Profession, Pathway, and Practice
This course introduces future applicants to nurse anesthesia programs to the CRNA role, application process, educational process, and foundational anesthesia sciences. Through mini-lectures, readings, discussions, case-based applications, faculty mentorship and simulation experiences, students will gain the knowledge and strategies needed for successful program entry and preparation for successful nurse anesthesia training.
Learning Outcomes
- Describe the historical development and current scope of nurse anesthesia practice.
- Identify prerequisites, application requirements, and expectations for admission into nurse anesthesia programs.
- Explain foundational science concepts relevant to anesthesia (respiratory and cardiovascular physiology, pharmacology, and pathophysiology).
- Recognize patient safety priorities, including crisis management and professional ethics.
- Develop a personal action plan for academic and professional readiness.
Course Format and Pacing
This is an online course delivered through Canvas, UC Davis CPE’s learning management system. Course materials—including video lectures, readings, case-based assignments, and simulation experiences—are released on a structured, week-by-week schedule. Students move through the course together, with regular due dates to support consistent progress and engagement.
