Blues and Cars

In rock 'n’ roll songs, cars are often associated with freedom, independence, and sexual appeal: think “Rocket 88” and “Maybellene.” Cars in the blues reflect a more complicated reality, giving voice to the ambiguous attitude toward automobiles of African Americans living in rural and urban poverty in the early twentieth century. This course will explore cars in the blues and the historical reality of ownership and travel for Black Americans.
