Training Tomorrow’s HR Leaders

Human resource professionals are essential to an organization's success—serving as a bridge between business goals and workforce needs. They play a critical role in hiring and retaining talent, supporting employee development and fostering a positive work environment. If you’re passionate about helping people thrive and want to make a meaningful impact in the workplace, a career in HR offers a rewarding and dynamic path forward.

Demand for HR Professionals in the Region

In recent years, the Sacramento region has seen huge growth in HR manager jobs. Per Lightcast, a labor market analytics firm, HR managers saw the second highest growth rate among the top management occupations, at 9.1%. While job growth may have dropped since then, Sacramento remains in the top five hiring cities for human resources.

Throughout California, earnings for HR professionals are competitive. According to Lightcast, the average salary for this career path in California has increased by 9.9% from June 2024 to May 2025.

And in a 2024 Bureau of Labor Statistics report, an HR specialist in the Sacramento metropolitan area can expect to earn a median annual salary of $87,130 compared to the national average of $79,730.

Training for HR Professionals

HR professionals typically handle every aspect of employee relations, so there are many different roles and career paths to take. For those just starting out in the field, entry-level positions, such as HR assistant/associate, may be broad and involve a variety of administrative duties, including maintaining records, benefits and payroll, and answering employee questions. There are opportunities to follow specialized paths within the field even early on, including HR analyst, staffing coordinator or specialist, and recruiting assistant.

I appreciated that I was able to connect with professionals in the field and use them as resources. Doing human resources in California can be challenging, so to have people that you know and trust is invaluable,” Human Resource Management Certificate grad Michelle Diaz, director of Human Resources, Wayfinder Family Services

Because HR professionals can take a variety of career paths, having a background or formal training in HR can set you up for success and give those looking for a job the advantage they need to stand out. Taught by subject matter experts, UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education’s Human Resource Management Certificate Program provides foundational training to help you succeed in the evolving demands of the HR field.
