Never Standing Still: Heather Gastellum’s Journey of Growth

As the interim executive director for the Associated Students of UC Davis (ASUCD), Heather Gastellum describes herself as a “lifelong servant leader” who refuses to stand still.

“I do not like to be stagnant,” she said. “I want to continually grow and challenge myself.”

That drive led her to UC Davis Continuing and Professional Education’s online Coaching for Life and Work Certificate Program, which gave her the opportunity to sharpen her skills, expand her impact and approach her leadership with a new perspective.

“The program stretched me,” said Heather. “It provided time for deep self-reflection and gave me tangible tools to approach my work with a different lens.”

What motivated you to enroll in this program?

I had coworkers who spoke highly of the program and that helped spark my interest. Ultimately, it came down to my personal interest in coaching and a desire to explore it further.

How does your role at ASUCD connect to the coaching program?

The coaching program directly and indirectly supports what I do every day. I don’t coach per se, but I work with student leaders, and the skills I learned in the program absolutely enhanced how I'm able to engage with them.

Part of my passion is one-on-one coaching, so that is also something I'm able to incorporate even though it's not a direct part of my job.

What were you hoping to achieve by completing this online certificate?

I wanted to grow so I could better support my staff and students. The coach approach adds value I use every day in my work. As a lifelong servant leader, the program enhanced my skills in being able to serve others.

What specific tools did you gain to help you move toward your goals and change how you approach your work?

I loved the focus on deep listening, asking powerful questions and being curious. Whether it is with a group or an individual, those skills can be used daily and throughout life.

What aspects of the program did you find most valuable?

There was tremendous wisdom in the instructors who led each class. I was inspired and motivated by what they said and offered. Also, the mentor program was one of the best aspects. Working one-on-one with someone who gave direct feedback helped me tremendously.

Can you share a moment from the program that really stood out to you? Something that felt like a turning point or eye-opener?

There was a moment, about midway through, when I was second-guessing myself—wondering why someone would come to me for coaching. My mentor simply said: You can do this, and you can do it well. That affirmation was the boost I needed.

How are you applying what you’ve learned?

Invest in yourself. Inspire others.

I am implementing more intentional group coaching with my students. I have over 800 direct and indirect student employees whom I support, and I believe that everything I’ve learned in the program will help me better serve those students.

What advice would you give to someone considering this program?

We don't always allow ourselves to take the time to develop personally and professionally. This program is incredible. It meets the needs of a diverse group of people in a variety of industries. It is intensive. It takes time. But the investment is worth it. Go for it!
