Finding the Right Fit in Construction

How UC Davis CPE’s Construction Management Certificate Program helped Ryan Lombard navigate career uncertainty to a successful career in the construction industry.

After high school, Ryan Lombard was unsure what he wanted to do for a career.

He began studying business administration at Sierra College before entering the workforce full time. While working at a residential HVAC company, he gained an appreciation for the construction industry, before landing a job with his current employer Solace Enterprises, Inc. After a year, he was promoted to an entry-level project engineer position.

“I quickly became interested in the commercial construction world,” said Ryan.

He later applied for a project manager position and was hired. Seeking formal education in the field, Ryan enrolled in the Construction Management Certificate Program at UC Davis Continuing Education.

“My goal was to become better versed and educated in the industry,” he said. “My employer has always been very supportive of continuing education and invested in me.”

Learning the Business of Construction

The Construction Management Certificate Program gave Ryan a background on construction processes that he was unfamiliar with and the knowledge he needed for his role as project manager.

Working for a design-build contractor, Ryan found the content on construction design processes particularly helpful in his day-to-day work. After finishing the program, he was able to be involved with and even lead the design-build effort for the mechanical design of a large healthcare project.

Ryan also appreciated exploring the various design processes such as LEAN construction principles and the Schematic Design, Design Development and Construction Documents phases.
