Exploring Academic Careers through Reading and Writing

Open to students entering grades 9-12

At most universities, there are hundreds of undergraduate majors and thousands of courses to choose from, and selecting a major that speaks to your interests and abilities is an important factor in getting the most out of your college experience.

In this unique introduction to university courses, you will read excerpts from academic work in various fields of study and participate in high-level tasks that present challenges that undergraduate students face.

Working individually and in groups, you will explore a variety of selected readings from diverse areas of study, such as mechanical engineering, food science, international relations and more. As you familiarize yourself with the vocabulary, key terms and writing of college-level work, you will then participate in discussions about these readings, synthesizing what you have learned in written responses or as part of a group project.

By the end of this course, you will have familiarized yourself with a number of potential majors, learned more about what interests you as a student, and enhanced traits necessary for college success, including:

  • critical reading skills
  • annotation strategies
  • analyzing the strength of an argument
